GULF SHORES, Ala. - The No. 6 University of North Georgia (UNG) softball team split day two of the Gulf Shores Invitational on Sunday, falling 2-1 to Florida Tech before rebounding with a 6-0 victory over Delta State.
Game 1: Florida Tech 2, North Georgia 1
Florida Tech scored both of its runs in the second inning on a pair of RBI doubles and held on for the one-run win.
North Georgia trimmed the deficit in the fifth inning when Ava Lunsford drove in a run with an RBI double.
The Nighthawks totaled five hits in the contest, led by Sydnee Reaves, who recorded two hits.
Chloe Poss went the distance in the circle for UNG, pitching seven innings and allowing two runs on six hits while striking out five.
Game 2: North Georgia 6, Delta State 0
The Nighthawks responded with a shutout win over Delta State, breaking open a scoreless game with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. UNG capitalized on a Delta State miscue before Clara Cherry delivered a pinch-hit RBI single to bring home Kayla Berry and Kaitlyn Johnson.
North Georgia added four more runs in the fifth inning to put the game away. Morgan Martin highlighted the frame with a three-run home run, while Poss also drove in a run.
Caroline Conner earned the start and the win for the Nighthawks, tossing six scoreless innings and allowing three hits with two strikeouts. Mallory Forrester closed out the final inning, retiring the side with one strikeout.
The Nighthawk offense totaled nine hits in the win. Reaves posted her second multi-hit game of the day, while Johnson and Lunsford each added two hits.
North Georgia returns to Dahlonega on Feb. 7 for a doubleheader against Valdosta State at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
