No. 8 Nighthawks Sweep Final Day of Gold City Classic

DAHLONEGA – The No. 8 University of North Georgia (UNG) softball team completed a Saturday sweep the second and final day of the Gold City Classic, defeating Barry 7-5 before cruising past Northwood 7-1.

Game 1: North Georgia 7, Barry 5

North Georgia built an early cushion in the opener, scoring five runs across the first two innings. Morgan Martin jump-started the offense in the first with a two-run double, and the Nighthawks added three more in the second, highlighted by RBI groundouts from Journey Roberts and Sydnee Reaves.

Barry answered with a solo home run in the second and two runs in the third to close within 6-3, but Martin responded with a solo homer in the bottom of the third to restore a three-run margin.

The Buccaneers made things interesting in the sixth, trimming the deficit to 6-5 on a pair of RBI doubles, before North Georgia answered immediately. Jenna Miles delivered a run-scoring single in the bottom of the frame to provide insurance.

Chloe Poss earned the win in relief, striking out nine over 5.2 innings, while Lila Mullinax worked the opening 1.1.

Game 2: North Georgia 7, Northwood 1

In the nightcap, North Georgia shook off an early run and took control with a steady offensive attack.

Northwood scored in the top of the first, but the Nighthawks tied the game in the third on a Reaves RBI single. UNG broke the contest open in the fifth with three runs, using an RBI sacrifice fly from Roberts, an RBI double by Reaves and another run-scoring single from Miles to take a 4-1 lead.

The Nighthawks added three more in the sixth, highlighted by RBI singles from Kayla Berry, Roberts and Reaves to seal the sweep.

Caroline Conner picked up the win, allowing one run over five innings with six strikeouts, while Mullinax tossed two scoreless frames in relief.

North Georgia returns to action Feb. 17 with a doubleheader against Lee in Chattanooga.
