DAHLONEGA – The No. 5 University of North Georgia (UNG) softball team delivered dominant performances in the circle and at the plate, sweeping Shorter with 10-0 and 12-0 run-rule victories in a nonconference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.
Game One: North Georgia 10, Shorter 0 (5 Inn.)
North Georgia wasted no time setting the tone, plating four runs in the bottom of the first inning to seize early control.
Carleigh Knowles recorded her 17th double of the season to drive in the game's first run before Marycille Brumby blasted her eighth home run of the year to stretch the lead to 3-0. Ava Lunsford lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield to cap the inning and make it 4-0.
After a scoreless second, the Nighthawks tacked on two more in the third on a two-RBI line drive to center from Kaitlyn Johnson, pushing the advantage to six.
UNG continued to roll in the fourth as Sydnee Reaves led off with a double and later scored on a single from Jenna Miles and a Shorter error. With two runners on, Morgan Martin sent a three-run homer to left field to put the game out of reach for Shorter.
Chloe Poss secured her league-leading 16th win, striking out four and allowing just one hit across four innings in the shutout.
Game Two: North Georgia 12, Shorter 0 (5 Inn.)
The Nighthawks again jumped out early, using back-to-back hits from Reaves and Knowles to take a 1-0 lead.
North Georgia broke the game open with a five-run inning. Following a leadoff double from Journey Roberts, Reaves delivered an RBI single to extend the lead. With the bases loaded, Martin drove in two with a double to make it 4-0. Kayla Berry added to the lead with an RBI groundout, and Lunsford followed with a run-scoring single to give UNG a 6-0 cushion.
Graci West retired the side in order in the fourth, setting the stage for North Georgia's biggest inning of the day.
Roberts, Reaves and Miles opened the frame with back-to-back-to-back hits to load the bases for Brumby, who drew a walk to bring in another run. Martin continued her standout day with her second two-RBI double of the game, while Berry added an RBI single to push the lead into double digits.
The Nighthawks tacked on two more runs later in the inning to set Mallory Forrester up to close out the shutout victory in the fifth.
West earned her first win of the season, tossing four scoreless innings while allowing just one hit.
Reaves was a perfect 3-3 at the plate in game two, while scoring three runs. The senior centerfielder totaled five runs across the doubleheader.
Martin also had a solid afternoon, finishing with three hits and seven RBI in the two wins.
The Nighthawks (27-5, 7-2 PBC) return to conference play this weekend to take on Georgia Southwestern. First pitch for the series opener is set for Friday, Mar. 27 at 6 p.m. in Americus, Ga.
