Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

North Georgia Falters Late in Road Loss at Georgia College

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The University of North Georgia (UNG) women's basketball team lost a Peach Belt Conference (PBC) matchup to Georgia College, 67-65, off a pair of last-second free throws from the Bobcats on Wednesday night at the Centennial Center.

The Nighthawks jumped out the gates with a quick three-pointer from Averie Jones and a layup from Zaynah Preston for the first buckets of the game. The Bobcats responded with a 6-0 run to capture their first lead of the game. Georgia College did not get many more opportunities to score in the first, due in large part to Ava McGlockton, who anchored UNG's defense and finished the quarter with six rebounds.

North Georgia was able to maintain its lead in the second quarter. A three from Maddie Millar with 1:19 remaining in the half put UNG out in front by six. The Bobcats stayed on UNG's heels, but the Nighthawks headed into the locker room with a 32-28 lead.

The third quarter saw the Nighthawks continue to stay out in front. Foul trouble from the Bobcats put Preston at the free-throw line to give UNG its largest lead of the game at nine.

In the fourth, the Bobcats started to mount their comeback, as back-to-back threes from Deshona Gaither and Caroline Beavin gave GCSU its first lead since the first quarter.

The Nighthawks and Bobcats continued to trade buckets heading into the final minute of the game. Jones converted on an and-one layup with 34 seconds left to give UNG a one-point lead.

Beavin answered the Nighthawks with a three to put the Bobcats back in front. On the other end, Preston lobbed the ball down low to McGlockton who hit a turn around jumper to tie the game with five seconds remaining.

Out of the Bobcats' final timeout, Gaither drove left into the paint and was fouled on the shot with less than one second remaining. Gaither knocked down both free throws and sealed the last-second win for Georgia College.

North Georgia (16-11, 11-6 PBC) was led by Preston who tied her career-high with 22 points. McGlockton chipped in 10 rebounds for the second consecutive game.

Georgia College (9-16, 5-12 PBC) was paced by Gaither with 25 points.

The Nighthawks head back to Dahlonega for their Homecoming game against Flagler on Saturday, Feb. 21. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Lynn Cottrell Arena inside the UNG Convocation Center.
