CHATTANOOGA – The No. 16 University of North Georgia men's tennis team ended a two-match skid with a 4-1 win over Catawba Tuesday at the Scenic City Showcase.
The Indians took the early advantage in the match by securing the doubles point with wins in the #2 and #3 doubles matches. However, the Nighthawks responded with a sweep in the singles matches to clinch the match.
Wins in the #1, #2, #3 and #5 singles, UNG clinched its eighth win of the year.
Junior Robin Eldin was the first Nighthawk to bring home a singles match, as he won with ease 6-2, 6-2. Eldin was followed minutes later by wins in the #2 and #5 singles matches.
In the #2 match, senior Giulio Sassi defeated Indians junior Tyler Juergens 6-0, 6-2. It was just a few moments later that freshman Marcos Castellanos secured his 6-1, 6-0 win.
That meant UNG led 3-1 and was one win away from clinching the match. That one win came when #1 singles senior Joaquin Benoit cruised to an easy 6-3, 6-2 victory over Catawba graduate student Edoardo Cecere to clinch the 4-1 team win.
UNG went 1-2 in the showcase dropping matches to NAIA No. 2 Tennessee Wesleyan and No. 17 Drury before the win Tuesday.
Now the Nighthawks will face Peach Belt foe Augusta in a 1 p.m. match on Friday, Mar. 15 from the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek.
