DAHLONEGA — A dominant performance for the University of North Georgia women's soccer team highlighted Senior Day at the UNG Soccer Field at Lynn Cottrell Park. The Nighthawk attack was unrelenting for much of the afternoon as UNG defeated Albany Stat 10-1, tying for the third most goals in program history.
Alex Clark kicked off the fireworks for North Georgia, scoring the game's first goal in the 22nd minute. That goal would be just the beginning as that opening goal opened up the floodgates with UNG scoring in quick succession, once in the 25th minute and again in the 28th minute.
The second goal came from
Katey Derkay, one of three on the day for the senior forward in a hat trick performance. Derkay added goals in the 25th, 31st and 55th minute for her first career hat trick. The 28th-minute goal came by way of a
Michelle LaPenta penalty kick after
Arielle Aronoff was fouled in the box.
Aronoff followed Derkay's goal in the 31st minute with one of her own in the 43rd minute to close out the half with a 5-0 lead.
Maysoon El-Shami, who eclipsed 6,000 career minutes played in the match, made it a 6-0 game, scoring just after the halftime break in the 46th minute.
Albany State would put one on the board on a breakaway by Jordan Keene (ASU) in the 49th minute. The ASU goal would kickstart another run of scoring for the Nighthawks, as
Liv Sullens added another in the 52nd minute, followed by Derkay's 55th-minute goal to take an 8-1 lead.
Just after El-Shami completed her 6,000th career minute played, the senior midfielder scored the ninth goal for the Nighthawks in the 66th minute before UNG closed out the 10-1 victory with a goal in the 73rd minute by
Meghan O'Brien.
Next up for the Nighthawks is their final regular season road matchup, facing USC Aiken on Wednesday (Oct. 18) at 4:00 p.m. USC Aiken holds a 1-6-2 record, picking up their second tie of the season against Georgia Southwestern on Saturday (Oct. 14).
