DAHLONEGA – A total-team effort from the No. 3 University of North Georgia (UNG) softball team lifted the Nighthawks to a 7-1 win and a series victory against USC Beaufort (USCB) on Saturday afternoon at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium.
The Nighthawks (32-6, 12-3 PBC) received a balanced-offensive output from the lineup, as six different starters recorded a hit in a game they never trailed.
North Georgia opened the series finale with a statement in the bottom of the first. After a leadoff single from Sydnee Reaves and Carleigh Knowles reached on an error, Marycille Brumby paid it off by launching her 10th homer of the season to give the Nighthawks an early 3-0 advantage.
The Sand Sharks threatened to cut into the North Georgia lead in the top of the third, but Chloe Poss and the Nighthawks worked out of a bases-loaded jam to keep USCB off the board.
After a scoreless third inning, the Sand Sharks did break through with an RBI single to cut the lead to two.
The bottom of the fourth proved to be another big frame for the Nighthawks, as an error by the Sand Sharks sent home another run to build North Georgia's lead back up to three. A sacrifice fly from Journey Roberts and RBI groundout from Kaitlyn Johnson tacked on two more to extend the advantage 6-1.
Morgan Martin delivered the final blow in the top of the sixth with her second home run of the series to cushion North Georgia's lead at six for good.
Poss picked up her 18th win of her senior season, tossing five innings in the circle, only giving up one run off seven hits.
Martin posted another impressive outing, finishing the series 4-8 at the plate with two home runs, two walks drawn and three runs scored.
USCB (21-16, 5-9 PBC) was led by Catharine Conway at the top of the order with three hits in the series finale.
North Georgia will have six days to prepare for its next PBC series against Columbus State. The opener is set for Friday, Apr. 10 at 6 p.m. in Columbus, Ga.
