Late Offense Leads No. 8 Nighthawks to Sweep of Middle Georgia

Cochran, Ga. – The No. 8 University of North Georgia (UNG) rode a pair of solid offensive performances in an 8-1 and 14-3 doubleheader sweep over Middle Georgia on Sunday afternoon.

The Nighthawks (39-8, 19-5 PBC) shined in their final road series of the regular season, completing their second conference series sweep in a row while outscoring Middle Georgia (16-26, 8-16 PBC) 30-4 over the weekend.

Game One: North Georgia 8, Middle Georgia 1

After a scoreless opening inning, the Nighthawks got on the board first in the second. Ava Lunsford and Kayla Berry took advantage of an errant throw by Jada Akeson at shortstop to come around and score and take the first lead of the afternoon.

Carleigh Knowles picked up right where she left off in the series opener, as she connected on an RBI double to pay off a leadoff single from Jenna Miles to extend the North Georgia lead in the top of the third.

The Knights found their first run of the series in the bottom frame with an RBI single to cut the lead to two.

Lila Mullinax and CJ McBride started to find a groove in the circle, as each starting pitcher worked through the lineups to keep the score stagnant at 3-1 through the middle innings.

With the score still too close for comfort, the Nighthawk bats came alive in the top of the seventh to distance themselves from Middle Georgia.

A trio of singles from Marycille Brumby, Berry and Chloe Poss loaded the bases for Avery Moffitt, who roped a double down the left field line to bring home two runs and give North Georgia some breathing room.

Journey Roberts kept things rolling by scoring on a wild pitch and tacking another run onto the UNG lead. An RBI groundout from Sydnee Reaves and an RBI single by Miles added two more insurance runs on the board, as Mullinax used a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh to solidify the 8-1 win.

Mullinax improved to an impressive 9-1 on the season with another complete-game performance, striking out five batters while only allowing two hits and the lone run in the bottom of the third.

Game Two: North Georgia 14, Middle Georgia 3  (5 Inn.)

The Nighthawks stayed dialed in for the finale, as an RBI single from Knowles in the opening frame put North Georgia on the board first for the third-straight game of the series.

The Knights had an answer in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer to put Middle Georgia out in front.

North Georgia countered immediately with a three-run top of the second to recapture the lead. Kaitlyn Johnson and Reaves cashed in on a pair of walks from Berry and Roberts with an RBI single and groundout to take a 3-2 lead. Miles kept things moving with another RBI single to send Johnson home and double the North Georgia lead.

In the top of the third, Berry built on her strong showing in the series finale with an RBI triple to the gap in right centerfield to extend the lead to three.

The Nighthawk bats stayed hot, as Lunsford doubled down the left field line to add two more runs on the board for North Georgia.

Caroline Conner retired the side in the bottom frame to set the Nighthawks up for their best inning of the series, doubling their run total with a seven spot in the top of the fourth to seal their win.

Knowles got things started with a two-run blast to left field to extend the lead to seven. A few at bats later, Lunsford struck again with a three RBI single to left field to put the game firmly in North Georgia's hands. Reaves lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, and Miles came around to score on an error to add the final two runs on the board and the cherry on top of the series sweep.

Conner secured her eighth win of the 2026 campaign, tossing 4.2 innings to go along with three strikeouts, while giving up three hits and two runs.

Lunsford led the Nighthawks in the series finale with a pair of hits and a season-high five RBI. Miles also delivered a standout performance across the doubleheader, finishing the day with five hits, two RBI and two runs scored.

The Nighthawks will bring a six-game winning streak into their final series of the regular season against Augusta. First pitch for the series opener is set for Saturday, May 2 at 1 p.m. at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium.
