No. 10 North Georgia Sweeps Newberry in Season Opener

DAHLONEGA - The No. 10 University of North Georgia (UNG) men's tennis team opened the 2026 season with a dominant 7-0 sweep of Newberry on Thursday afternoon at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek.

The Nighthawks took control early in doubles play as Marcos Castellanos and Franco Rebora earned a 6-4 victory. Juan Cruz Blanco and Eliseo Alcalde followed with a decisive 6-1 win to clinch the doubles point, while João Luis Silva and Janos Varga were tied 4-4 when play was halted.

North Georgia carried that momentum into singles competition, sweeping all six matches. Silva posted a 6-2, 6-4 win, followed by Castellanos' commanding 6-1, 6-1 victory. Varga secured the team win with a 6-2, 6-4 decision.

Blanco added another point with a 6-4, 6-0 sweep, Rebora claimed a 6-0, 6-4 win, and Lleyton Beasley closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-2 victory.

The Nighthawks return to action Feb. 8 at Converse.
