MONTEVALLO, Ala. - A late push prevented the shutout, but a six-run third inning by Montevallo proved too much as the No. 13 University of North Georgia (UNG) baseball team fell 13-3 on Tuesday afternoon in nonconference baseball action.
North Georgia (12-4) collected 10 hits but could not capitalize early, while Montevallo used a big third inning to seize control.
The Nighthawks threatened multiple times in the opening innings, putting runners aboard in both the first and third, but stranded five runners through the first three frames. Montevallo capitalized shortly after to take a commanding lead.
The Falcons added three more runs in the fourth, and extended the margin to 11-0 with a two-run double in the fifth inning.
North Georgia's pitching staff used eight arms in the contest after starter
Dylan Holbrook took the loss, allowing four runs over 2.1 innings.
Chandler Thiel and
Cody Soliday provided scoreless relief outings later in the game.
Despite trailing throughout, the Nighthawks continued to battle offensively and broke through in the ninth inning.
Kyle Robitzsch delivered an RBI single down the right-field line before
Edwin Bowman IV followed with a two-run double, accounting for all three North Georgia runs.
Robitzsch finished 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI to lead the offense, while
Ben Hamacher recorded two hits and stole two bases.
Hunter Thompson and
Davis Wright each scored a run as part of the late rally.
The Nighthawks look to bounce back as they return to action later this week, facing Middle Georgia in Peach Belt Conference action beginning Feb. 27.
