DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The No. 29 University of North Georgia (UNG) baseball team used timely hitting and a late surge at the plate to complete a series sweep of Embry-Riddle with a 9-6 victory on Sunday. The series sweep marks the first time since 2019 that North Georgia has opened the season with three road road wins.Â
North Georgia struck first in the top of the second inning. After a bunt single by Schley Gordy, JD Coleman came around to score on an Embry-Riddle error. Brady Skipper followed with a bunt single of his own to plate Jake Streeter and give the Nighthawks an early 2-0 lead.
The Eagles responded with two runs in the bottom of the second to even the game at 2-all. The score remained tied until the fifth, when Ben Hamacher drove in Skipper with an RBI single to put UNG back in front.
Embry-Riddle answered in the home half of the fifth, scoring two runs to take its first lead of the game at 4-3. The Eagles added another run in the sixth on a wild pitch to extend the margin to 5-3.
North Georgia rallied in the seventh inning as RBI singles from Cam Hodge and Hunter Thompson tied the game at 5-5. The Nighthawks regained the lead in the eighth with RBI singles from Landon Tate and Hamacher, pushing the advantage to 7-5.
Embry-Riddle pulled within a run in the bottom of the eighth, but North Georgia added two insurance runs in the ninth. The Nighthawks capitalized on another Eagles miscue before Gordy drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to seal the 9-6 win.
North Georgia totaled 10 hits in the contest, led by Skipper and Hamacher, who each recorded two hits.
Andrew Duval got the start for the Nighthawks, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing four runs on six hits while striking out eight. Tyler Chinpire worked one inning in relief and surrendered one run.
Ryan Taylor earned the win after tossing 2.1 innings, giving up one run on one hit with three strikeouts. Avery Brown picked up the save, pitching the final 1.1 innings and allowing two hits with one strikeout.
The Nighthawks open their home schedule on Feb. 3 with a midweek matchup against Young Harris. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
