DAHLONEGA - The No. 29 University of North Georgia (UNG) baseball team dropped a 16-5 decision to No. 16 Young Harris Tuesday afternoon at Bob Stein Stadium.
Young Harris jumped out early with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning and added two more runs in the second to build a 4-0 lead. North Georgia responded in a big way in the bottom of the second, erupting for five runs to take a 5-4 advantage. Cam Hodge highlighted the inning with a three-run home run.
The Mountain Lions answered with a run in the third to tie the game at 5-5, then added single runs in the fourth and fifth to regain the lead at 7-5. Young Harris broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning to extend the margin to 11-5.
North Georgia retired the Mountain Lions in order in the seventh, but Young Harris tacked on two runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth to secure the 16-5 victory.
The Nighthawks finished with six hits on the day, led by Ben Hamacher, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Dylan Holbrook made the start on the mound for North Georgia, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing four runs on three hits. Rhaylin Carvajal followed with 1.2 innings of relief, surrendering one run on three hits with one strikeout. Evan Carter pitched one inning and was credited with the loss.
Ethan Finch, Robert Hunt, Cole Evilsizor, Chandler Thiel and Thomas Greeson combined for 10 runs allowed on 11 hits in relief. Cody Soliday recorded the final two outs for the Nighthawks and struck out one.
North Georgia returns to action Feb. 6-8 at Bob Stein Stadium with a three-game series against Mississippi College.
