AIKEN, S.C. – The University of North Georgia men's soccer team continued its midseason surge Wednesday night, using a pair of first-half goals and a stout defensive effort to earn a 2-0 Peach Belt Conference victory at USC Aiken.
The Nighthawks improved to 7-3-4 overall and 6-1-1 in conference play and its league-leading point total to 19 points.
North Georgia wasted little time setting the tone as
Santiago Cano found the back of the net in the 11th minute, converting a setup from
Isaac Calderon for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Samuel Gomez doubled the advantage just before halftime, capitalizing on a through ball from
Stephane Shongo in the 42nd minute for his first career goal in a UNG uniform.
From there,
Aleksa Lukic and the Nighthawk back line took control, limiting the Pacers to just two shots on goal across 90 minutes. Lukic collected two saves on the night to record his fourth shutout of the season.
USC Aiken held an 11-12 margin in total shots but North Georgia generated more quality chances, placing six on frame while earning eight corner kicks, including six in the second half.
The Nighthawks will now take a week off before resuming action on Wednesday, Oct. 22 with a home contest against Clayton State with kickoff set for 4:30 p.m.
