Nighthawks Topple Tusculum Behind Doubles Sweep

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The University of North Georgia men's tennis team took down Tusculum Wednesday afternoon behind a 6-1 commanding win on the road. The non-conference win gives the Nighthawks their fourth victory of the year and moves the team to 4-0 this season.

In the doubles portion of the match, UNG was led by the combination of ITA No. 22 senior Joaquin Benoit and junior Robin Eldin to a 6-2 victory in the first pairing.

In an exciting second doubles match, the Nighthawks pulled out a close one, 7-6. Senior Giulio Sassi and freshman Marcos Castellanos took down their Pioneer opponents 7-3 in the tiebreaker to win the match.

With a 6-3 win from sophomore Eliseo Alcalde and senior Christopher Cahour in the third doubles match, the Nighthawks swept the doubles slate against Tusculum.

In the singles portion, UNG won five out of the six matches to power themselves to victory. Benoit took down senior Nemanja Subanovic 6-4, 6-3. 

Sassi won a three-set match against freshman Anton Krondell, recovering from a 7-5 loss in the second set to the tune of a 6-1 toppling in the third.

Castellanos had an exciting win in his singles victory. He opened the match with a 6-4 first set win but fell 6-1 in the second set. In the third, Castellanos won a competitive tiebreaker 10-6 to seal his victory.

The Nighthawks now prepare for a ranked contest at home against No. 16 Auburn Montgomery. The Nighthawks will welcome the Warhawks to the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek on Saturday, Feb. 24. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
