DAHLONEGA – The University of North Georgia women's basketball team came up on the short end of a 73-56 Peach Belt Conference decision to No. 19 Georgia Southwestern on Wednesday evening at Lynn Cottrell Arena at the UNG Convocation Center.
The Nighthawks (11-6, 4-3 Peach Belt) had two players score in double figures, led by Emily Trushel, who had 18 points and nine rebounds. Kendall Emener added 11 points and six rebounds and Kaylee Sticker added seven points and two blocks off the bench.
GSW (13-2, 6-1 PBC) was led by Kayla Langley's 27 points and 13 rebounds. The center scored 21 of her points in the second half to push the Hurricanes to their 13th win of the season.
The loss is the third in the last four games for the Nighthawks.
After falling behind 13-10, North Georgia went on a 5-0 run with 2:47 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Sticker, to take a 15-13 lead. The Nighthawks then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 17-15 advantage. North Georgia got out and ran in the period, scoring four points on the break.
The Nighthawks could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing by four, 31-27, as the Nighthawks were held scoreless in the final 3:09 of the period.
Georgia Southwestern kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 52-40 advantage before North Georgia went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Isabel Davenport's layup, to shrink the deficit to 52-45 with 6:31 to go in the contest.
Georgia Southwestern responded and outscored the Nighthawks the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 73-56.
The Nighthawks were 3-of-22 (14%) from behind the three-point line on the night.
North Georgia returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 27 when the Nighthawks embark on a two-game conference road trip at Augusta.
