North Georgia Rolls Past Lander in PBC Win

DAHLONEGA – Both sides of the ball contributed to the University of North Georgia women's basketball team's 75-42 Peach Belt Conference victory over Lander (7-16, 4-10 PBC) in Lynn Cottrell Arena at the UNG Convocation Center. The Nighthawks used a well-oiled offensive attack and a tough defensive stand in the second half to run away with a 33-point victory. 

Kayla Massop controlled the glass for much of the game earning a double-double by the end of the first half and finishing with 15 points and 15 rebounds, grabbing six on the offensive end. Massop finished the game by making all seven of her shots from the field while adding eight assists.

Josie Earnhardt and Niyah Lutz tied for second in scoring with 14. Earnhardt and Lutz finished with six of UNG's nine made field goals from beyond the arc, with Earnhardt leading the team by making four of her nine attempts.

Caroline Martin and Isabel Davenport led the defensive attack, logging two steals in the game. Key Moments
  • Lander held firm in the first quarter taking an 8-7 lead with 6:32 left in the quarter. The Nighthawks would retake the lead 16 seconds later and hold it for the remainder of the game.
  • UNG (16-7, 8-6 PBC) took off with a 15-0 run ending with 2:03 remaining in the half. Nine of the Nighthawks' 15 points during the run came from three.
  • Another run in the third quarter, this time a 14-2 run, opened up the game more, with North Georgia taking a 22-point lead at the 3:16 mark of the third quarter.
  • A 9-0 run added to the Nighthawks' lead, with UNG allowing just 16 points in the second half.
Next Up
The Nighthawks will look to avenge a loss to Young Harris (10-12, 6-8 PbC) when they head on the road on Wednesday (Feb. 15) for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off against the Mountain Lions.
