DAHLONEGA –
Miguel Pineda made his first start in goal for the No. 7 University of North Georgia (UNG) men's soccer team and recorded seven saves to earn a clean sheet as the Nighthawks posted a 2-0 victory over ranked-opponent Palm Beach Atlantic Friday afternoon at the UNG Soccer Field.
North Georgia controlled much of the early action but was unable to find the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes, recording four shots. Palm Beach Atlantic registered five shots in the first half, with three on goal, but Pineda turned away each attempt to keep the match scoreless at halftime.
The Nighthawks broke through in the 56th minute when
Rhys Shirley found the back of the net at the 55:45 mark to give North Georgia a 1-0 lead.
Pavle Radojkovic provided the assist on Shirley's goal.
North Georgia doubled its advantage in the 65th minute as
Maxwell Mitchell scored off a setup from
Aram Lara. The assist marked the 16th of Lara's career, extending his status as North Georgia's career assists leader since at least 2004.
Pineda came up with his biggest save of the afternoon with 15 minutes remaining when Palm Beach Atlantic leading scorer Kobi Thomas stepped to the spot for a penalty kick. Pineda made a diving stop to preserve the shutout and keep the Sailfish off the scoreboard.
North Georgia finished with six shots in the second half, including four on goal. Palm Beach Atlantic recorded eight second-half shots, with four on goal, but Pineda and the Nighthawk defense held firm to secure the clean sheet.
The Nighthawks (3-0-1) return to action Sunday, Sept. 6, against No. 9 Auburn Montgomery in a top-10 matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for noon at the UNG Soccer Field.
