MACON, Ga. – The No. 11 University of North Georgia (UNG) women's tennis team dropped the doubles point but stormed back in singles play to claim a 4-3 victory over Middle Georgia in Peach Belt Conference action Friday.
The Nighthawks found themselves trailing early after Middle Georgia secured wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The No. 1 pairing of Anastasiia Opolska and Olesya Stokusova, ranked No. 27 nationally, was tied 6-6 before the match was abandoned.
North Georgia responded in singles with four wins to secure the comeback. Linn Goerdes got things started with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 4, while No. 31 Stokusova followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2. No. 73 Sofia Giraldo added a key three-set victory at No. 3, bouncing back after dropping the second set to win 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.
Emily Bush clinched the match for the Nighthawks at No. 5, earning a 6-1, 6-2 straight-set win to seal the 4-3 decision.
Middle Georgia picked up its other points at No. 1 singles, where No. 15 Opolska fell in a tight three-set match, and at No. 6 singles.
North Georgia will wrap up the regular season on April 18, traveling to Americus, Georgia, to face Georgia Southwestern.
