Milledgeville, Ga. – The No. 4 University of North Georgia (UNG) softball team dropped its first Peach Belt Conference (PBC) matchup of the season 3-2 to Georgia College on Friday night at Bobcat Softball Field.
The Nighthawks struck first after a leadoff double from Sydnee Reaves, Carleigh Knowles brought her home on a single to right field to plate the first run of the ballgame.
The lone run in the top of the first would be the only score up on the board for either team for the next four innings. Chloe Poss kept the Bobcats in check, only giving up a pair of hits through the first six innings.
In the top of the sixth, Morgan Martin blasted her fifth home run of the season to cushion North Georgia's lead 2-0.
The Bobcats found life in the home-half of the inning with an RBI double to cut North Georgia's lead in half.
After a three up, three down from the Nighthawks in the top of the seventh, UNG headed into the bottom of the inning still up just one run, leaving room for the Bobcats to go for the win.
A costly error from the Nighthawks advanced a Bobcat sixty feet from scoring. A groundout to second scored the runner at third, tying up the game 2-2. With a runner still in scoring position, Kimber Kent stepped up and delivered the game-winning hit to center field to bring the runner home and secure the walkoff victory.
Knowles and Martin paced the Nighthawks (16-4, 0-1 PBC) with a hit and an RBI each.
Poss picked up just her second loss of the season, pitching 6.2 innings while giving up six hits and three runs while recording four strikeouts.
Georgia College (4-7, 1-0 PBC) was led by Reina Checo and Kent each with two hits.
The Nighthawks look to even up the series and pick up their first conference win of the season tomorrow. First pitch for game two is set for 1 p.m. in Milledgeville, Ga.
