YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The no. 14 University of North Georgia (UNG) baseball team built a five-run lead but came up just short in an 8-7 extra-inning loss to Young Harris on Tuesday afternoon.
The Nighthawks led 5-0 through seven innings behind a strong start from Rhaylin Carvajal before the Mountain Lions rallied late and walked it off in the 10th.
North Georgia struck first in the opening inning when Brady Skipper singled to center and drove in Ben Hamacher.
The Nighthawks added to the lead in the third as Caleb Farr singled to right to score Jake Prince and push the advantage to 2-0. An inning later, Brody Yeomans delivered the big swing of the night, launching a three-run homer to left to plate Schley Gordy and Cam Hodge and stretch the lead to 5-0.
North Georgia made it 6-0 in the eighth when Skipper worked a bases-loaded walk to bring home Yeomans.
Carvajal was dominant through seven shutout innings, allowing four hits while striking out three and walking two.
The Mountain Lions got on the board with a two-run homer in the eighth, then capitalized on timely hits in the ninth to tie the game at 6-6.
North Georgia briefly regained the lead in the 10th when Skipper laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Jake Streeter and make it 7-6. However, Young Harris answered with a run-scoring single to tie the game before plating the winning run later in the inning.
Yeomans finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs to lead the offense, while Skipper drove in three runs. Prince and Hamacher each added two hits.
North Georgia returns to action March 6-7 with a three-game Peach Belt Conference series against Claflin in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
