ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The No. 12 University of North Georgia (UNG) men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 3 Flagler in Peach Belt Conference action Friday.
The Nighthawks were unable to secure the doubles point, falling in all three matches. At No. 1 doubles, Juan Cruz Blanco and Ben Brandl were edged 6-4, while Janos Varga and Pedro Liborio dropped a 6-4 decision at No. 2. Franco Rebora and Marcos Castellanos fell 6-1 at the No. 3 position.
In singles play, North Georgia picked up a pair of victories. Liborio earned a hard-fought win at No. 1, rallying after a first-set loss to take the second set and force a tiebreaker, securing the match point. Castellanos also delivered for the Nighthawks at No. 3, winning in straight sets, 7-6, 6-1.
Flagler claimed the remaining four singles matches to secure the team victory. João Luis Silva fell at No. 2, 1-6, 2-6, while Brandl dropped a tightly contested match at No. 4 in a third-set tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets. Rebora fell 1-6, 3-6 at No. 5, and Varga was defeated 0-6, 1-6 at No. 6.
North Georgia returns to action March 29 with a nonconference matchup against No. 11 Rollins in Winter Park, Florida.
