CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The No. 12 University of North Georgia (UNG) men's tennis team fell to No. 9 Indianapolis, 4-2, Wednesday afternoon during play at the Scenic City Spring Break Showcase.
The Greyhounds (7-4) claimed the doubles point and picked up three singles victories to secure the neutral-site win over the Nighthawks (6-2).
Indianapolis took an early lead after winning the first two doubles matches. Mathieu Derache and Asier Ayllon Prado defeated Joao Luis Silva and Ben Brandl 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, while Tadeo Gaggiofatto and Zaid Shelbaya earned a 6-2 win over Juan Cruz Blanco and Lleyton Beasley at No. 2 to clinch the opening point. The No. 3 doubles match featuring Franco Rebora and Marcos Castellanos against Lorenzo Di Cursi and Jovan Matovic was left unfinished with the Nighthawk duo leading 4-3.
In singles play, Indianapolis extended its lead with straight-set victories at the top of the lineup. No. 7 Ayllon Prado defeated Castellanos 7-5, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, and No. 14 Gaggiofatto topped Brandl 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2.
North Georgia picked up its first point at No. 4 singles as Rebora posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Matovic. Eliseo Alcalde added another Nighthawk win at No. 6 with a 6-3, 6-3 result against No. 62 Vladislav Gorbatenko.
The Greyhounds clinched the match at No. 5 singles where Shelbaya defeated Beasley 6-2, 6-3. The No. 3 singles match between Derache and Blanco was left unfinished with Derache leading 6-2, 4-6, 5-4 when the team result was decided.
North Georgia continues play this week at the Scenic City Spring Break Showcase facing No. 5 UT Tyler on Thursday.
