INDIANAPOLIS - On the final day of the 2026 ITA Division II Women's National Team Indoor Championship, the No. 3 University of North Georgia (UNG) women's tennis team used a dominant singles performance to defeat Indianapolis 4-2 Sunday, overcoming an early deficit after doubles play.
The Greyhounds claimed the doubles point, taking decisions at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Maelys Thiery-James and Magda Kornijczuk defeated Anastasiia Opolska and Olesya Stokusova 7-5 at No. 1 doubles, while Jimena De Pablos and Sofia Cardenas secured a 6-0 win over Sofia Giraldo and Erika Terek at No. 3. The No. 2 doubles match featuring Emily Bush and Linn Goerdes was unfinished at 4-4.
North Georgia quickly shifted momentum once singles play began, winning four of the five completed matches to clinch the dual.
Opolska evened the match with a decisive 6-2, 6-2 victory over Thiery-James at No. 1 singles, and Stokusova followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win against Kornijczuk at the No. 3 spot to give the Nighthawks their first lead.
Goerdes extended the advantage with a tightly contested 7-5, 6-4 victory over Silvia Zappoli at No. 4 singles, and Louise Rey secured the match-clinching point with a 6-2, 6-4 win against Liza Simak at No. 5.
Indianapolis picked up its second point at No. 6 singles, where Sofia Cardenas rallied past Victoria Niox-Chateau in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. The No. 2 singles match between Giraldo and De Pablos went unfinished with Giraldo leading after taking the first set 6-4.
The Nighthawks return to action Feb. 26 when they host Carson-Newman University at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek.
