MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - A fast start in the nightcap and steady production throughout the opener carried the University of North Georgia (UNG) to a baseball doubleheader sweep of Georgia College on Saturday, as the Nighthawks claimed the first game, 7-1, before rolling to a 9-6 victory in the nightcap.
North Georgia broke through in the first inning of the opener on an RBI single from Kyle Robitzsch, then pulled away with a three-run fifth. Ben Hamacher and Cam Hodge delivered run-scoring singles in the frame, and another run crossed on a wild pitch to give UNG a 4-1 cushion.
The Nighthawks added insurance late, scoring twice in the seventh and once more in the eighth. Robitzsch drove in two of those runs with RBI singles, finishing 3-for-4 with three RBIs on the afternoon.
Kevin Cox earned the win, allowing just one run on three hits over eight strong innings while striking out four. Rhaylin Carvajal worked a scoreless ninth to close out the opener.
The second game of the twinbill was decided early, as North Georgia erupted for eight runs in the first inning. RBI singles from Cam Hodge, JD Coleman and Schley Gordy jump-started the rally before Landon Tate delivered a two-run single. Hamacher followed with an RBI base hit, and Brady Skipper capped the outburst with a two-run double down the left-field line.
Georgia College pushed across two runs in the fourth and added four more in the final two innings, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome. Hunter Thompson provided UNG's final run with a solo home run in the ninth.
Hamacher went 3-for-4 in the nightcap, while Andrew Duval picked up the win after allowing two runs over seven innings and striking out 10.
North Georgia returns to action Feb. 17 against Lee in Cleveland, Tenn., with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
