Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 5 North Georgia Rolls to 5-0 Peach Belt Win Over Albany State to Stay Unbeaten

DAHLONEGA - The No. 5 University of North Georgia women's soccer team showed no signs of slowing down Wednesday evening as the Nighthawks delivered a dominant 5-0 victory over Albany State at the UNG Soccer Complex to remain unbeaten on the year.

The Nighthawks (10-0-1, 6-0 Peach Belt Conference) continued their torrid offensive form, scoring four goals in a 10-minute first-half outburst to put the match out of reach early. The win marked North Georgia's fourth shutout of the season and its seventh straight win as the Nighthawks maintained control of first place in the Peach Belt standings with a league-best 18 points.

The 10-0-1 start is the best in program history through a season's first 11 matches. The 2011 season started with 10 consecutive victories before the Nighthawks dropped a match.

Sophomore forward Chloe Diaz ignited the scoring in the 16th minute, burying a finish from close range after a crisp passing sequence from Alex Clark and Nina Lopez. Less than a minute later, Diaz turned provider as she assisted on a goal by Lopez, who beat the goalkeeper from the top of the box to double the lead.

North Georgia's backline then joined the scoring party as Grace McGill made it 3-0 in the 23rd minute, smashing home a rebound following a corner kick. Two minutes later, freshman midfielder Adleigh Wheeler pushed the margin to 4-0, converting a low cross from Alexa Aronoff to cap off a clinical stretch of four goals in just over eight minutes of play.

The Nighthawks continued to press after halftime, generating steady pressure and denying Albany State any chance to gain momentum. In the 50th minute, Kamora Hall added her first collegiate goal, finishing off a through ball from Zoie St. John with Diaz collecting her second assist of the match.

North Georgia finished with a 28-2 advantage in shots and an 11-0 edge in corner kicks, rarely allowing Albany State (1-8, 0-5 PBC) into the attacking third. The Golden Rams' goalkeeper Leire Rodriguez Najera kept the scoreline from growing even larger, recording 11 saves including several leaping stops in the second half.

At the other end, goalkeepers Faith Bullied and Kayleigh Marreel split time in net to combine for the shutout. Bullied started and faced no shots through 47 minutes before Marreel entered for the second half, making one save to preserve North Georgia's clean sheet.

Head coach Kayley Ralton's squad has now outscored its opponents 17-2 in conference play continuing to showcase one of the most balanced attacks and stingiest defenses in the country.

The Nighthawks return to action Saturday, Oct. 11 with a road trip to Georgia Southwestern with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. in Americus.
