DAHLONEGA - It was the third win in four matches for the University of North Georgia men's soccer team, defeating Anderson 3-1 efficiently at the UNG Soccer Field at Lynn Cottrell Park. A first-half goal followed by two in the second half keyed the Nighthawks into the winning side.
Early in the first half, as both teams began to feel each other out, UNG took the first swing, as
Santiago Cano delivered the opening blow in the ninth minute, assisted by
Will Bentley. Both sides would trade opportunities as the Nighthawks continued to create chances in the final moments before halftime.
After the halftime break, North Georgia weathered the storm as Anderson pushed back, attempting to create the equalizer. In the 75th minute,
Iyan Windham would increase the lead to two, chipping the goalkeeper to add some insurance late.
The Trojans would not go down without a fight, answering the Windham goal with one of their own just eight minutes later. As Anderson began to push, feeling the momentum from the 83rd-minute goal,
Aram Lara would shut the door in the final minute. Lara made a move to the inside of the defender and put a well-placed shot just under the crossbar to take a 3-1 victory.
North Georgia will look to make it four out of the last five in the win column, heading on the road to open up Peach Belt Conference play against Georgia Southwestern in Americus, Ga. The match is set for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff on Saturday (Sept. 16). The Hurricanes have won two straight coming into the week, holding a record of 2-1 after defeating Middle Georgia State in their last game.
