Baseball Splits Friday Twinbill at Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. - The University of North Georgia baseball team split Friday's doubleheader at Augusta, winning the first game before dropping the nightcap.

GAME 1 - UNG 7, AU 1
North Georgia jumped out quickly, using two solo homers from Crews Taylor and Jake Arnold to take an early 2-0 lead, setting the tone for the game. After a RBI groundout in the third that pushed the Nighthawk lead out further, Arnold stepped up again and blasted a two run homer over the left field wall to give UNG a 5-0 lead.

Josh Sosa kept the momentum going in the fifth with a sacrifice fly before Augusta finally pushed a run across in the bottom of the seventh on a Nighthawk error. UNG scored the final run of the game in the top of the eighth on a passed ball.

Pierce Williams (4-2) got the win, going 6.2 innings with seven strikeouts, allowing just the unearned run. Beau Jones came in relief and threw the rest of the game, allowing just one walk.

GAME 2 - AU 5, UNG 2
Crews Taylor led off the game with another solo homer to give UNG early momentum, but the Jaguar bats came alive, starting in the third inning on a RBI groundout that tied the game up at 1-1. After UNG scored in the fourth on a Jaguar error, Augusta took their first lead of the series on a two-run blast in the bottom of the fourth.

Augusta scored two more in the sixth on a RBI double after the Nighthawks committed an error earlier in the inning and could not get a base runner on the seventh as the Jags took the win.

NOTES
- Sosa went 3-for-6 on the day at the plate, including a 2-for-2 performance in the nightcap.

NEXT UP
The two teams will wrap up the series tomorrow afternoon.
