DAHLONEGA - After tying the game in the bottom of the ninth, the No. 18 University of North Georgia baseball team couldn't find the winning run as they fell in 17 innings Friday night to Catawba, 3-2.
The Indians were the first to the scoreboard, pushing single runs across in the sixth and seventh innings to take a 2-0 lead. North Georgia answered in the eighth with a
Crews Taylor homer followed by a
Nik Levensteins homer in the ninth to tie the game.
After remaining at 2-2 until the 17th inning, Catawba loaded the bases after a Nighthawk error got their rally started, bringing home the eventual game winner on a bases loaded walk. North Georgia almost tied the game on a
Tim Conway two-out double, but UNG was cut down at the plate with the tying run just feet from home.
NOTES
- The 17 innings marks the longest game in North Georgia history, besting a 14 inning matchup against West Georgia back on February 27, 2019. The game fell one inning shy of tying the Peach Belt record for the longest game that has stood since 2010.
- The two teams combined for 117 at bats and 130 plate appearances.
- After playing 8.1 innings at first base,
Jake Arnold came in to pitch, striking out 12 over his 6.2 innings of relief. He allowed just one hit and two walks, falling just one strikeout outside the top three in program history for a single game.
