Game Preview:Â Coming off of its first-ever PBC regular season championship, the University of North Georgia women's soccer team is set to host two matches this weekend to open the 2018 campaign. The Nighthawks will play host to Converse on Thursday before a quick turnaround against Anderson on Saturday.
Â
Nighthawks on the Web:Â Fans can follow UNG live on the Internet via live stats (UNGAthletics.com) and via web stream on YouTube or Facebook Live through the Nighthawk Sports Network. Fans can also follow the action through Twitter by following the women's soccer team (@UNGWSOC).
Â
Quoting Head Coach Chris Adams:Â "Right now, we are focused a bit more on ourselves. One of the really good things about us coming out of the preseason is we have a lot of depth. These two opponents are two we won't take lightly. Last season, we didn't have the opportunity to play Converse, but we barely got out of Anderson with a win in overtime. We are excited that we get to play someone else in a game that counts."
Â
2017 in Review:Â North Georgia won a share of its first ever PBC regular season championship a year ago after finishing the season 8-2 in league play. The Nighthawks claimed their ninth straight 10-win season after going 12-4-2 overall.
Â
Scouting Converse: After going 4-10-2 last season, the Valkyries promoted Kaitlyn Kerrigan to be the new head coach of the women's soccer program at Converse. The Valkyries were picked 11th in the Conference Carolinas preseason coaches poll.
Â
Series Versus Converse:Â Thursday will mark the fifth meeting all-time between UNG and Converse with North Georgia taking the first four matches. The two were scheduled to meet last season, but weather forced the two sides to cancel.
Â
Scouting Anderson:Â The Trojans went 6-9-2 a year ago and advanced to the SAC semifinals before falling to Wingate, 2-1. Under new head coach Sarah Jacobs, Anderson was picked seventh in the SAC preseason coaches poll.
Â
Series Versus Anderson: North Georgia has won all six prior matchups in the series with Anderson, including a 2-1 overtime winner last season in South Carolina. Olivia Dumphy netted the game winner in the 96th minute.
Â
Nighthawks in Season Openers: UNG has won three of the last four season openers and hasn't lost a home opener since 2010. In last season's home opener against Florida Tech, the Nighthawks earned a 0-0 draw.
Preseason Accolades: The Nighthawks were picked second in the preseason PBC poll announced Tuesday morning, garnering two first-place votes along the way. Columbus State was tabbed first with Flagler, UNC Pembroke and Young Harris rounding out the top five. Also, seniors Asa Thorsen and Renee VanHorn and sophomore Taylor Malasek were selected to the preseason All-Conference team last week. Thorsen was a first teamer a year ago, while VanHorn garnered second team honors. Malasek is the reigning PBC Freshman of the Year.
