Game Preview: The University of North Georgia men's soccer team wraps up regular season play with two crucial Peach Belt Conference matches this week starting with a showdown against No. 2 Young Harris Wednesday night.
Promotions: Wednesday's match is Senior Night as 12 seniors will be honored pregame. Tomorrow is also Spirit Night, where Mr. and Ms. UNG will be crowned at halftime.
Scenarios: The Nighthawks have clinched a spot in the Peach Belt Conference tournament, but the seeding is still up for grabs. With two wins and some help, UNG could still win the PBC regular season title. The Nighthawks can finish no lower than fifth.
Nighthawks on the Web: Fans can follow UNG at home live on the Internet via live stats (UNGAthletics.com) and via web stream on YouTube or Facebook Live through the Nighthawk Sports Network. Links for Saturday's game can be found above, courtesy of Georgia Southwestern. Fans can also follow the action through Twitter by following the men's soccer team (@UNGMSOC).
Last Week: North Georgia got back on the winning side of .500 with a 3-0 win over USC Aiken Saturday afternoon. Alex Grant scored twice, setting a new UNG career mark for goals in a career with his 16th goal of his Nighthawk career.
Scouting Young Harris: The Mountain Lions are 13-0-0 on the year and 5-0-0 in league play. They have allowed just seven goals on the year and have shutout their past three opponents.
Series Versus Young Harris: UNG is 3-9 against Young Harris all-time but have played the Mountain Lions close the past four meetings. These two teams have met 10 times over the past five seasons, matching up in tournament play each year. UNG won the last meeting, 3-0, in the semifinals and won the last game in Dahlonega, 3-2, two years ago.
Scouting Georgia Southwestern: Georgia Southwestern finds themselves on the outside looking in at the PBC tournament standings, but the 'Canes can still work their way in with two wins and at least one Clayton State loss. GSW has played three tight matchups as of late, drawing with USC Aiken before a 1-0 loss to Lander.
Series Versus Georgia Southwestern: UNG is 13-1 all-time against the Hurricanes and have won seven straight in the series. The lone loss for the Nighthawks came in 2010 in Americus by a 3-0 score.
PBC Standings: North Georgia currently sits in a tie for third with Francis Marion. Should the PBC tournament start today, UNG would have the No. 3 seed because of a win over FMU earlier this season. With a win Wednesday, Young Harris would clinch the PBC regular season title.
Statistical Standings: Matt Sharman leads the league in saves this season with 75. The Nighthawks have the second most goals scored, corner kicks and shots per match in the league. Nationally, UNG has the fourth most saves per match and the 15th most shots per outing. Matt Sharman is at No. 13 in saves per game and No. 21 in total saves.
