CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Despite securing the doubles point and a top-ranked singles victory, the No. 7 University of North Georgia (UNG) men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 24 Lee on Monday at the Champions Club Tennis Complex at Rivermont Park as part of the 3rd Annual Scenic City College Tennis Spring Break Showcase.
The Nighthawks opened the match by claiming the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Franco Rebora and Marcos Castellanos were first off the court at No. 3 doubles with a 6-4 victory over Rytis Razminas and Francisco Guimaraes. Lee responded with a win at No. 2 doubles, but the pairing of Janos Varga and Pedro Liborio secured the point for North Georgia with a 6-4 win over Quinn Groenendijk and Jip Langerhuizen at the top position.
Lee turned the momentum in singles play, winning five of six matches to secure the team victory.
At the top of the lineup, No. 6 Pedro Liborio earned the Nighthawks' lone singles win, defeating No. 12 Filipe Krohn in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6, in a battle between nationally ranked players.
Lee answered on court two as No. 41 Quinn Groenendijk rallied past No. 66 João Luis Silva, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
The Flames secured additional victories across the middle and lower courts. Jip Langerhuizen defeated Janos Varga 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, while Stefan Mos topped Marcos Castellanos 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4.
Francisco Guimaraes earned a three-set victory over Ben Brandl at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, and Rytis Razminas closed the match with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 win against Franco Rebora at No. 6.
North Georgia continues play at the Scenic City Showcase March 11 against Indianapolis.
