WINTER PARK, Fla. - The No. 11 University of North Georgia (UNG) women's tennis team dropped a 4-1 non-conference decision to No. 13 Rollins on Sunday, falling short despite a strong start in doubles play.
North Georgia fought hard in doubles play, highlighted by a dominant 6-2 victory at No. 1 from the duo of Anastasiia Opolska and Olesya Stokusova. Rollins responded, however, taking the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches to secure the early 1-0 edge.
In singles play, Rollins seized control with straight-set victories at the top of the lineup. No. 5 Alyssa Novoa defeated No. 12 Opolska 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1, while Nisan Can earned a 6-0, 6-3 win over No. 22 Stokusova at No. 2. Amina Abdulloeva extended the lead with a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Victoria Niox-Chateau at No. 5.
Emily Bush provided the lone point for the Nighthawks, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Sydney Eckstein at No. 6 singles.
Two remaining singles matches went unfinished after Rollins clinched the team victory. Sofia Giraldo held a 6-0, 4-5 position at No. 3, while Linn Goerdes led 6-4, 3-3 at No. 4 at the time of the decision.
North Georgia looks to bounce back in conference play, hosting Georgia College on April 2 at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek.
