No. 7 Nighthawks Rout Carson-Newman with Strong Singles Run

DAHLONEGA – The No. 7 University of North Georgia (UNG) women's tennis team continued its strong spring campaign with a 7-0 sweep of Carson-Newman on Friday at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek.

The Nighthawks secured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to seize early control of the match.

Anastasiia Opolska and Olesya Stokusova opened the afternoon with a 6-2 victory at No. 1 over Kira Baacke and Maria del Mar Sarda Marti. Emily Bush and Linn Goerdes followed with a 6-4 win at No. 2 against Leah McBride and Mar Fraile to clinch the doubles point. Carson-Newman claimed the No. 3 spot, 7-5, over Victoria Niox-Chateau and Sofia Giraldo.

North Georgia carried that momentum into singles play, picking up straight-set wins in four of six matches.

Opolska was first off the court at No. 1, dispatching Hala Awad 6-4, 6-0. Stokusova added a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 3 to stretch the Nighthawk lead to 3-0.

The clinching point came from Niox-Chateau at No. 4. After taking the opening set 6-1, she regrouped following a second-set loss and closed out a 7-5 third-set win over McBride to secure the team victory.

With the match decided, Goerdes rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6. Giraldo outlasted Sarda Marti in a tightly contested match at No. 2, 7-6, 3-6, 7-5, and Bush capped the sweep with a 7-6, 7-5, 6-2 result at No. 5.

North Georgia returns to action March 9 against Lee as the Nighthawks host the 3rd Annual Scenic City College Tennis Spring Break Showcase in Chattanooga.
