CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The No. 9 University of North Georgia (UNG) women's tennis team earned a ranked victory Wednesday morning, defeating No. 26 Indianapolis, 4-1, at the Scenic City Spring Break Showcase.
The Nighthawks (8-2) secured the doubles point and won three singles matches to clinch the neutral-site matchup against the Greyhounds (4-8).
North Georgia took early control by winning two of the three doubles matches. The duo of Anastasiia Opolska and Olesya Stokusova earned a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles, following Emily Bush and Linn Goerdes who had a 6-2 victory at No. 2 to secure the opening point. The third doubles match between Victoria Niox-Chateau and Sofia Giraldo and Indianapolis' Jimena De Pablos Hernando and Sofia Cardenas was unfinished.
In singles play, the Nighthawks added three straight-set victories. No. 15 Opolska led the charge at the top position with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Maelys Thiery-James, while No. 29 Stokusova rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 victory against No. 73 Magda Kornijczuk at No. 3. Niox-Chateau sealed the team win with a 6-2, 7-6 triumph over Linya Chen at No. 5.
Indianapolis picked up its lone point at No. 2 singles, where De Pablos Hernando defeated Sofia Giraldo 6-4, 6-4.
Two remaining matches were left unfinished after the team result was decided, with Goerdes leading Silvia Zappoli 6-2, 3-6, 5-2 at No. 4 and Sofia Cardenas ahead of Bush 6-2, 3-6, 4-1 at No. 6.
North Georgia concludes the Scenic City Spring Break Showcase Thursday against No. 24 UT Tyler.
