INDIANAPOLIS - The No. 3 University of North Georgia (UNG) women's tennis team dropped its opening-round matchup at the ITA Division II National Team Indoor Championship, falling 4-2 to No. 6Â West Florida on Friday.
North Georgia opened the match by claiming the doubles point with victories on courts one and three. Sofia Giraldo and Erika Terek set the tone with a 6-1 win over Sophie Smith and Laila Kamil at No. 3 doubles. After West Florida evened the doubles competition with a 6-2 win at No. 2, Anastasiia Opolska and Olesya Stokusova secured the point for the Nighthawks with a 6-4 victory against Carlota Verdu and Sandra Recuenco on court one.
Giraldo added North Georgia's second point in singles play, defeating Aline Midori 7-6, 7-5 at the No. 2 position.
West Florida responded by taking control across the remaining courts to clinch the match. Opolska fell in a three-set battle at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 7-6, 2-6, while Linn Goerdes dropped a straight-set decision at No. 4, 4-6, 1-6. Louise Rey was edged at No. 5 singles, 4-6, 6-7, and Emily Bush fell 2-6, 6-7 at court six as the Argonauts secured the team victory.
Stokusova's match at No. 3 singles went unfinished with the opening set tied 6-6 when play was halted.
North Georgia will continue competition Saturday, facing No. 7Â Catawba at 10 a.m. in the consolation round.
