DAHLONEGA – In its first home match since Feb. 26, the No. 4 University of North Georgia women's tennis team dominated Lander in a 7-0 conference win, its first Peach Belt victory of the season. The Nighthawks are now 13-0 on the season and have soared to the fourth spot on the latest rankings from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
UNG sealed the doubles point quickly with wins in the #2 and #3 doubles matches. Seniors Johanna Lippert and Viktorie Wojcikova grabbed an easy 6-0 win the #2 match. Then senior Valentina Ascarrunz and junior Carolina Reis took a smooth 6-1 win minutes later to seal the doubles point.
In singles play, no Nighthawk lost a single set en route to a dominant win. No. 21 ITA singles player Linnikova cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win in the #1 singles match.
In the #5 and #6 singles, Ascarrunz and Reis lost just one set in the 25 combined sets played.
Lippert won 6-2, 7-6 (8-6 tiebreaker) in the #2 singles, while senior Svetlana Teterina took the #4 match on a pair of 6-2 wins.
Finally, it was junior Ashley Moinard winning the #3 singles competition 6-4, 6-4 to end the day.
Now UNG gets ready for another home conference match, this time against Augusta. The match begins 1 p.m. on Monday, Apr. 1 from the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek.
