No. 3 North Georgia Gets Doubleheader Shutout Against UNCP

DAHLONEGA – The No. 3 University of North Georgia softball team allowed zero runs in two games against UNC Pembroke at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium at Lynn Cottrell Park. The Nighthawks opened the weekend up with a 17-0 win over the Braves before another shutout, this time, a 3-0 victory in the second game.

Sophie Mooney (3), Hannah Forehand (2), and Gracie Mixson (3) all used the long ball to combine for eight RBIs. Mooney got the scoring started in the first with a two-RBI double before launching a solo shot in the second inning to give UNG an 8-0 lead. Forehand and Mixson each homered in the first to open the game with a commanding lead. 

Kristen Davis (1-1) picked up her first win of the season, throwing three and one third innings, and allowing one hit with eight strikeouts. Sadye Johnson found the right moment for her first hit of the afternoon, driving in two runs on a fourth-inning double.

The bats cooled off in the second game of the doubleheader, but the pitching continued to roll with Delaney Heaberlin (2-0) in the circle throwing 4 1/3 innings, allowing four hits while striking out four. Mooney (1) came in to shut things down earning a save after pitching two and one third innings and striking out five with no hits allowed. 

Madi Perry earned a walk in each at-bat, totaling four walks in the game. Georgia Blair drove in the game's first two runs, highlighted by a double to right field in the second inning.

Next Up
The Nighthawks turn around and face Lake Erie on Sunday (Feb. 19) for the first-ever matchup versus the Storm as part of Cancer Awareness Day. Lake Erie is coming off a doubleheader sweep over Young Harris on Saturday (Feb. 18). First pitch of the doubleheader is set for noon.
