No. 3 North Georgia Weathers Storm in Extras, Sweeps Lake Erie

DAHLONEGA – A streak of four straight shutouts ended, but the No. 3 University of North Georgia softball team was able to continue their winning streak after defeating Lake Erie College (1-2) 6-0 and 3-2 in their doubleheader at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium at Lynn Cottrell Park.

In the first game of the day, Hannah Forehand and Kristen Davis were the top contributors for UNG. Forehand accounted for four of the six runs driven in, tallying four RBIs by way of a home run in the fourth and a double in the fifth. Davis put together a dominant display in the circle earning a complete game shutout, allowing just one hit and striking out 12.

Jolie Lester had two hits in game one, driving in a run of her own in the fourth to open up the scoring for UNG.

Sophie Mooney stepped in to lead UNG in the second game. Mooney had a 2-for-3 day at the plate and looked to be on her way to a shutout victory before the Storm scored one in the sixth and one in the seventh to send the Nighthawks to extras for the first time this season.

Mooney finished her outing with six innings pitched, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out seven. Delaney Heaberlin (4-0) stepped in the circle to finish the job for the Nighthawks, earning the win in three innings of work. Heaberlin struck out four of the ten batters faced, and Katie Ward secured the tenth win of the season with a sacrifice fly in the ninth to send Forehand home for the walk-off.
Next Up
North Georgia will face West Georgia for a midweek home doubleheader against the Wolves beginning at noon on Wednesday (Feb. 22). UWG is coming off a series loss against West Alabama in Gulf South Conference play.
