COLUMBUS, Ga. - The No. 8 University of North Georgia women's tennis team took care of business Friday afternoon in the opening round of the Southeast Regional, beating No. 13 Wingate, 4-2.
The Nighthawks are now 3-0 against the Bulldogs in Southeast Regional play, besting Wingate twice in North Carolina in the 2018 and 2019 iterations of the tournament.
The Bulldogs won the doubles point, taking the first and third lines after UNG had an early advantage with a 6-1 win from Claudelle Labonte Frey and
Svetlana Teterina on the second line. Wingate took a 2-0 lead after a quick win at No. 4 singles before North Georgia finally got on the board.
Johanna Lippert took a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 to trim the lead to 2-1, setting up
Vaishali Jorge to win a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 match on the top line to tie it up. After Labonte Frey won 7-6 (3), 6-1 on the fifth line,
Anna Markvartova clinched the match with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win at No. 3 to send North Georgia to the round of 32.
The Nighthawks will now take on top-seeded and No. 6 Columbus State tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. with a spot in Altamonte Springs, Florida, on the line.
