COLUMBUS, Ga. - For the first time in program history, the No. 7 University of North Georgia women's tennis team took down No. 6 Columbus State in a 4-3 win Sunday afternoon.
The Cougars won the first doubles match to finish at No. 3, but North Georgia answered as
Vaishali Jorge and Claudelle Labonté Frey took the top line, 7-5, before
Johanna Lippert and
Svetlana Teterina took a 7-6 win at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point.
The singles play went back-and-forth with North Georgia ultimately winning three of the matches. Lippert took a 7-6, 6-4 win on the second line,
Cibeles Zuddy won at No. 6 by a 6-3, 6-2 win and
Anna Markvartova won in three sets at No. 3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
North Georgia claimed co-regular season champion honors with the win as the regular season came to a close Sunday. The PBC Championship will start next week with the bracket and match times to be released later this week.
