DAHLONEGA - The No. 12 University of North Georgia softball team opened up the Peach Belt series against Young Harris with a pair of run rule wins Saturday afternoon.
GAME 1 - UNG 12, YHC 4 (5 inn.)
The Nighthawks started by loading up the bases in the first and plating a pair off a
Hannah Forehand single and a hit by pitch. UNG went on to six in the second off RBI singles from
Haley Cummings and
Gracie Mixson, RBI doubles by Forehand and
Mallory Parker and a Mountain Lion error to take an 8-0 lead.
YHC answered in the top of the third, plating four runs to cut the lead in half, but the Nighthawks responded immediately in the bottom of the third, using a Forehand triple and a Mixson single to stretch the lead back out to 10-4. North Georgia scored on a RBI groundout in the fourth before
Marley Holmes walked off the game in the fifth with a RBI single.
Delaney Heaberlin (11-6) got the win, fanning one while allowing just one earned run.
GAME 2 - UNG 12, YHC 3 (6 inn.)
Young Harris got on the board first, scoring a pair in the top of the first and a single run in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead. North Georgia's bats finally woke up in the bottom of the fifth as the Nighthawks pushed seven across home plate on a
Madison Simmons RBI double, two fielder's choices, a passed ball and a
Jolie Lester RBI single to take a 7-3 lead.
UNG used two Mountain Lion errors in the sixth to take a 9-3 advantage, setting up Parker to hit a three run homer to walk off the doubleheader.
Tybee Denton (8-2) was credited with the win, going two innings in relief and fanning four.
NOTES
- Lester finished the twinbill 5-for-8 at the plate, while Parker went 4-for-6.
