KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The 18th-ranked University of North Georgia women's tennis team opened up the 2022 season with a 5-2 win over Carson-Newman Sunday afternoon.
The Nighthawks claimed the first doubles match of the day on the top line with
Vaishali Jorge and
Johanna Lippert, 6-2, but the Eagles won the doubles point, winning the other two doubles tilts.
Carson-Newman went up 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-0 win on the fourth singles line, but that was the last point that the Eagles would claim as North Georgia stormed through the rest of singles play. Jorge got UNG on the board with a 6-1, 7-5 win on No. 2 before
Anna Markvartova won on the top line, 6-1, 6-2. Claudelle Labonte Frey won on the sixth line in three sets before Lippert clinched the win on the third line, 6-3, 7-5. Rafaella Villanueva won the final point of the match at No. 5 in straight sets.
The Nighthawks will open up the home portion of their schedule Wednesday as they host Anderson at 1:30 p.m.
