AMERICUS, Ga. - With less than 30 minutes to play, the University of North Georgia men's soccer team scored three times to send its Monday night match to extra time, but Georgia Southwestern found a golden goal in the first period of extra time to win, 5-4.
The Nighthawks needed just two minutes to find the back of the net as
Benjamin Elgueta scored to put UNG up, 1-0. Georgia Southwestern answered with a four goal outburst in a 15 minute span, starting in the 20th and 23rd minutes with Chris Salamatou's brace. Cole Davison scored in the 27th minute and Matteo Landais found paydirt in the 34th.
North Georgia finally broke through again in the 65th minute as
Gustavo Alencar found
Santiago Gimenez to cut the lead down to 4-2. Just 38 seconds later, Alencar converted a penalty kick to trim the lead to one. With under five minutes to play,
Michael Walsh took a pass from
Dawid Zajac and slotted home the tying goal.
GSW scored the golden goal in the 99th minute when Salamatou found Bryan Zuniga for the match winner.
NOTES
- North Georgia outshot GSW, 25-17, including a 12-9 advantage in shots on target.
- The GSW win snaps a nine-match unbeaten streak for UNG in the series.

North Georgia will return to the pitch on Monday, March 1, at the UNG Soccer Complex to take on Lander. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
