Box Score FLORENCE, S.C. - The No. 14 University of North Georgia men's tennis team moved to 4-1 in PBC conference play after comfortably dispatching Francis Marion on the road, 6-1.
The doubles line-up saw a tweak in pairings as
Jared Bones was given a starting role, partnering with Kevin Candido at No. 3 doubles. The move saw the unbeaten pair of
Ryan Gaskin and
Hugues Renaud bumped up a spot to No. 2 doubles, and they continued their hot form by winning, 6-2. No. 1 doubles then clinched the point with
Niklas Zielen and
Jess Jones also winning, 6-2, in straightforward style.
Needing three more matches to win, Zielen and Gaskin got singles off to a perfect start, both winning in straight sets. Zielen finished quickly, dominating his opponent in a swift 6-1, 6-2 victory. The win didn't come easily as both Jones and Renaud were forced into third sets.
Tim Kiehl dropped a singles line at No. 5, 2-6, 4-6, but UNG came roaring back, as the two seniors both won the third sets, Jones clinching the match following a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win.
UNG have just four regular season matches left, all of these being Peach Belt affairs. Next up, the Nighthawks return home where they will go up against No. 2 Columbus State. First serve is set for 2 p.m. Saturday at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek.
