LEXINGTON, Va. - The No. 19 University of North Georgia rifle team brought home both the smallbore and air rifle sectional championships as they defeated VMI in the NRA Sectional and the NCAA qualifier Saturday. North Georgia fired a season-high 4619 in aggregate scoring.
The Nighthawks shot a season-high 2296 in the smallbore discipline and swept the medals with
Tobin Sanctuary taking home the gold after a 578 score.
Ricky Medina earned the silver after shooting a 576 and
Lucas Gilliland brought home bronze with a 573. His 573 was also good for the ROTC Division gold medal.
UNG also was the team air rifle champions after Sanctuary again took home gold on a tiebreaker over Medina. Both shot scores of 583 before the tiebreak was brought in to decide the medals. Gilliland shot a 578 and earned the ROTC Division's gold as well.
Other personal records broken in the event were
Eric Azotea's air rifle score (572),
Nick Huang's air rifle score (558) and Gilliland's 573 in smallbore.
The Nighthawks will now prepare for the SoCon Championships March 2-3.
