CARROLLTON, Ga. - Asa Thorsen connected on her first goal of the season in the second overtime period, ending the game with the University of North Georgia women's soccer team defeating West Georgia, 3-2, Wednesday evening at UWG's University Field. The Nighthawks are now 1-1-1 in 2017.
Olivia Dumphy got the scoring started in the 20th minute after she took a pass from Thorsen and
Rosie Embley to put UNG on top, 1-0. It took 30 more minutes for North Georgia to double its lead as
Taylor Malasek put home a shot assisted by
Renee VanHorn in the 50th minute of play.
West Georgia was able to tie the game after scoring in the 71st and 87th minutes. Both teams had opportunities to score in the first overtime period, but eventually Thorsen broke through late in the second overtime period, giving the Nighthawks their first win of the season.
NOTES
- The double overtime win was the first such win since September 17, 2011, when North Georgia defeated UNC Pembroke, 1-0, with a goal in the 101st minute. The Thorsen goal in the 108th minute is the latest goal scored by North Georgia in the NCAA era.
- The Nighthawks remain unbeaten against the Wolves all-time and have outright won four straight matches against West Georgia. UNG has also never lost in Carrollton.
- UNG outshot the Wolves 21-13 in the contest. It is the first time this season that the Nighthawks have had more than 20 shots in a game.
- West Georgia is under the first year supervision of long time UNG assistant coach Stacey Balaam.
