Waidner & Zielen Named ITA Singles All-Americans

TEMPE, Ariz. - The team and individual honors keep rolling in for the University of North Georgia tennis teams as the programs were listed in the final national team rankings while Kathrin Waidner and Niklas Zielen were honored as All-Americans by virtue of their final singles ranking.

The Nighthawk men finished the year ranked No. 12 nationally after posting a 19-5 record and earning their fifth NCAA appearance in the last six seasons.

The UNG women capped a banner season with a 20-7 record and a No. 26 national ranking.  The Nighthawks earned the program's first-ever NCAA postseason appearance after setting a program-record for single season victories.

Waidner earned first team PBC All-Conference honors after posting a 21-4 overall and 9-3 conference record with both setting new program records for win totals.  She also sported a program-record 11-match winning streak in the final stretch of the 2017 season.

She finished the year ranked No. 19 in singles after becoming the first UNG women's tennis player to earn a national singles ranking in the NCAA era earlier this season.

Waidner becomes the women's tennis program's first NCAA All-American.

Zielen was 17-4 overall and 8-2 in PBC play in singles for the Nighthawks as he became the first North Georgia tennis player to be named the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year.

A sophomore from Frankfurt, Germany, Zielen was 5-1 against nationally-ranked opponents.  He finished the season ranked No. 18 in the final NCAA Division II singles rankings.

Zielen becomes the first UNG singles All-American since Felipe Friedrich in 2013.

Players earn All-American status by being ranked in the top-20 in the final ITA singles rankings.
