SAVANNAH, Ga. | The No. 22 University of North Georgia men's tennis team put a scare in No. 3 Armstrong State but eventually fell, 5-2, in the Round of 32 of the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Tournament on Monday afternoon at Bacon Park in Savannah.
The Pirates (24-2) will take part in the Round of 16 on May 18-21 in Denver, part of the NCAA Division II Spring Sports Festival. North Georgia, which won its first NCAA postseason match on Sunday with its 5-3 win over Georgia College, sees its season come to a close with an 18-8 record.
North Georgia won two of three doubles matches from the Pirates to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. The duo of
Joe Klokow and
Alexander Reinauer defeated Luca Cerin and Otakar Lucak, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles, then
Philipp Mueller and
Niklas Zielen downed No. 10-ranked Alberto Caceres Casas and Jan Porteset, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles.
Armstrong State picked up its doubles point at No. 2 doubles as No. 12-ranked Pablo Gor Costales and Ignacio Hernandez edged
Andre Canino and
Lukas Moritzen, 9-8 (4), in a tiebreaker.
The Pirates rallied to win four straight set singles matches to clinch the victory. North Georgia held the advantage in the two matches that went unfinished as Zielen was up a set at No. 2 singles and Reinauer had split the first two sets at No. 3 singles.
The record-breaking season included a new program benchmark for single season victories with 18.
