SAVANNAH, Ga. | The No. 20 University of North Georgia men's tennis team had its season come to an end in the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament with a 5-1 loss to No. 15 Columbus State at Beacon Park in Savannah.
CSU began the day by taking two of three doubles matches from the Nighthawks. Â The Nighthawks' lone point came in the second line where
Philipp Mueller and
Julian Schoeller defeated Martynas Zakaitis and Oussama Zoghlami, 8-6.
No. 19 Marco Almorin and Adi Malicbegovic outlasted No. 12
Mateus Camasmie and
Matheus Guida 8-5 in the top matchup.
Maciej Keirkus and Bendikt Wilde won by the same score over
Alexander Reinauer and
Tomas Schneider in the third.
Columbus State advanced to the second round with three victories in singles play.
No. 19 Malicbegovic downed Mueller by a 6-3, 6-2 score in the second match. Kierkus flipped the score and won 6-2, 6-3 over Schneider in the sixth, while Jorge Vargas held back Camasmie in the fifth, 6-2, 7-5, to clinch it for CSU.
Three matches went unfinished. No. 24 Zoghlami held a 6-2, 5-3 lead over Guida in the top matchup, while Wilde led Schoeller 6-3, 5-5 in the third and Almorin played Reinauer to a 3-6, 7-5 tie in the fourth.
North Georgia ends the season with a 14-6 record. The No. 20 national ranking marks a program high and the team's six conference victories set a new program record. UNG's 14 victories also matches a program high for single season victories.
