SAVANNAH, Ga. | The University of North Georgia men's and women's tennis teams each suffered setbacks to perennial power Armstrong State on Saturday afternoon in Peach Belt Conference play at Bacon Park in Savannah. The No. 32-ranked Nighthawk men fell 8-1 to No. 5-ranked Armstrong State, while the North Georgia women were blanked, 9-0, by the second-ranked Pirates.
In the men's match, the Pirates swept all three doubles matches, but North Georgia went down with a fight in the second match.
Philipp Mueller and
Julian Schoeller dropped a tight 9-8 (7-2) battle at No. 2 doubles.
North Georgia's lone point came when
Tomas Schneider upset No. 18-ranked Ignacio Hernandez in a third-set 10-point tiebreaker, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) at fifth singles. The point was the first ever for the UNG tennis program against Armstrong State.
Alexander Reinauer also extended his match to a third-set tiebreaker, falling 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5) to No. 14-ranked Pablo Gor in the third singles line.
In the women's match, North Georgia was shut out for the first time this season. The contest was the fourth road match against a top-50 ranked team in as many matches to open the 2015 season.
The win extends a pair of impressive streaks for the Pirates, who have now won 140 consecutive matches at home and have also won 124 consecutive regular season Peach Belt Conference matches, both streaks dating back to 2003.
North Georgia continues the road swing with league matches at Flagler tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon.
